It's an interesting op-ed and it seems to me that it is very on the money. I think that the system is to blame for crafting a political creature like Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton; candidates like Ron Paul, Mike Gravel or Dennis Kucinich can't be elected because they take a stance on hard issues, but the slimey, slithery political contortionists are electable because they take all the easy answers and appeal to the lowest common denominator - like the main problem with the sift, popularity does not equal quality, and the presidency is sadly a popularity contest.

Finally, at least people are starting to see his double talk. He really needs to take a stand on his issues and state what side he is on. His voting record should speak for itself, but he has to anchor himself to some issues eventually.

Otherwise he's dooming his own campaign.

David Brooks is an idiot. He said that Barack Obama was out of touch and would be out of place at an Applebee's salad bar. But Applebee's doesn't have a salad bar.

Obama would have been foolish to opt into public financing and Brooks is smart enough to know this. Ironically, Obama will actually get more (a LOT more) public financial support by opting out of the government's public finance program. Brooks is just pissed that McCain doesn't have enough public support to opt out as well.

^ Second the David Brooks is an idiot. He's just whining because he doesn't like the thought of a tough Democrat.

Besides, Obama always said he'd consider public financing, he did not unequivocally commit to it, contrary to what that obviously objective John McCain guy says.

Let's look at McCain's flip-flops.

My favorites:

Against off-shore drilling, now advocates it.

Thought Iraq would be easy, now says he always knew it would be hard.

Has been both for and against overturning Roe v. Wade.

Against Bush tax cuts, now for them.

Against torture, now for it.

Oh, and how could I forget? John McCain is an election finance criminal.

Technically that last one isn't a flip-flop, but a long-held position, but it seems relevant to the conversation anyways.

David Brooks is a Republican cheerleader. If he wanted to slam Obama for a serious flip-flop, he'd have to talk FISA, but Brooks won't do that because in his very prestigious role as a Republican cheerleader, that's Obama seeing reason, not selling out the 4th amendment.

I think Brooks' article was entertaining read, but I think Republicans like Brooks seem to think all of Obama's appeal comes from being "a different kind of politician", and that any time he makes a smart tactical or strategic move, it's evidence that he's "just another politician." They think articles like this will "shatter the illusion", and make us all get luvey-dovey about McCain, who's a "straight-talker".

If you read through the article I linked and the videos I linked, you'll find that if Brooks is really concerned about us liking a "two-faced politician", he needs to write an expose about McCain.

I won't be holding my breath.

Obama did not "throw wright under the bus". He just reiterated his disapproval of Wright's words.

There are many good reasons to abstain from voting on a bill, such as not having time to read it entirely, or plain agnosticism.

The campaign finance issue is insignificant next to the other differences between McCain and Obama.

First of all Wright threw his own damn self under the bus. Obama's first reaction was to, in sorts, defend reverend Wright. That was what his whole 'race' speech was about; suggesting the things Wright said were wrong, but to have an understanding of where the anger was coming from, and that the nation still experienced a lot of racial strife. Then Wright opened his big mouth again as though he'd learned nothing from the event of the preceding month. How many times do you stick your neck out for someone only to have them make a mockery out of your attempts?

As for the financing, its disappointing to see him go back on a promise. Although I understand why, and I think some of his points are valid, its still disappointing. At the very least he acknowledged that he had made the promise, and gave an explanation. The defacto way most politicians run is to completely ignore the fact they made a promise in the first place and offer no explanation. Hillary supporting the DNC's decision to not to count michigan and Florida's vote then pretending that never happened and accusing the rest of the DNC of stealing the vote from her in those two states? That ring a bell? That's what politicians that don't give a crap about their promises do, they don't go on TV admit what they said, then offer an explanation as to why they're no longer going to keep that promise.

EDIT: Just how much has he collected in small donations? I've seen article suggesting small donations make up a large percentage of his funding, but nothing with specific numbers. I know Ron Paul seemed to get a lot of monetary support that way as well. It would seem a preferable way to get campaign funding.

Oh yes and on the Applebee's comment, since it was mentioned, other than them not having a salad bar, their food isn't very good, not even when compared to their competitors. I went once, the food was of the quality of a good TV dinner. So while edible and it didn't make me wretch I could have gotten the same results by picking something up in the freezer section then throwing it in my microwave for 4 minutes. I've heard similar reports from people who's culinary pallet's I trust. And while I am not above eating TV dinners I am above eating them at a restaurant. So if Obama really is the sort of person I wouldn't find eating at Applebee's that only goes to show he has good taste.

Most of what Wright said at the press club was right. The wrong parts were all the stuff about God, the presumption that the attack on him had anything to do with an attack on the black church as a whole, and the lowbrow delivery.

Most of what Wright is being attacked for is just saying the same things about foreign policy that Ron Paul and retired generals have been saying all along -- that muslim hatred of the USA is blowback from US foreign policy of the past (such as the CIA-backed coups in Iran, Chile, Nicaragua, Panama, etc., and uncritical US support of Israel's land grab).

oh god that made my morning! :-D nicely done. And now you're being terminated for revealing our plot to the world, just as soon as we finish our time machine so that we may go back in time and remove your mothers ovaries before they may inflict more harm on the precious balance we are striving to achieve.
